View of the winery
The Domaine’s 20 hectares of vineyards are scattered around the wine producing villages of Montpeyroux, Jonquieres and Lagamas in the Herault. The vines grow in the foothills below the Larzac plateau in complex, arid, stony clay and limestone soil which is perfect for producing quality grapes. The climate is ideal too, with just the right combination of sun, frost, wind and rain to bring the grapes to full maturity in peak condition.

Alain Chabanon
Having worked with two of Europe’s leading winemakers, Alain Brumont in Madiran and Comte Peraldi in Corsica, Alain bought his first few hectares in the late 1980s and produced his first vintage in 1992. His ambition was to make fine, elegant wines that compete with the best in the world. Since, Alain has been flattered by plaudits from internationally respected wine professionals and journalists whose support has been incredibly encouraging, helping him to push ever forward in his quest.
Obviously, choosing the right grape varieties and caring for them properly is of paramount importance. That is why his vines are grown organically under the supervision of Ecocert & Alain never have recourse to chemicals.
The grapes are pick by hand into small baskets before the noonday heat sets in. They are hand sorted, too, before the processes of vinification, blending and maturing.

This wine is FABULOUS. Black as ink; tiny hints of liquorice emphasize the delicate, classic oak characteristics. It puts some of the best Pomerol and Saint Emilion to shame…
In a blind tasting organised by The Berrys of Grand Cru Wines on 29 Sep 2004, Chabanon’s cuvee “Le Merle aux Alouettes” vintage 1999 came ahead of 1999 Petrus Pomerol. Needn’t say more …
