Teobaldo Cappellano is perhaps one of the few great wine makers never to have been rated in the US consequently, he is virtually unknown except to hard-core Barolo enthusiasts. And to you now.
The jewel in his crown is the Gabutti vineyard located in Serralunga D'Alba. Gabutti has long been considered one of the greatest Crus of the entire Barolo DOCG, known for Barolos of great power and longevity. Though the name Gabutti is not included on his labels in protest to the appellation's expansion to inferior sites. Cappellano makes two Barolos: One called Pie Rupestris Barolo from vines planted in 1946, and Pie Franco from ungrafted young vines planted in the 1980s.
Teobaldo Cappellano is also the founder of a group of Italian wine makers called "Vini Veri" (True Wines) striving to represent the best that their respective regions have to offer.
